Support in Cases of Forced and Child Marriage
Forced and child marriage affects girls and women in many parts of the world. It can involve pressure, threats, deception, violence, financial arrangements, or a marriage organised without the free and informed consent of the person concerned.
Those affected may be isolated, closely monitored, deprived of their documents, prevented from continuing their education or work, or threatened if they refuse the marriage. In many cases, they are unable to contact the police or seek support safely.
EOI and AWACB work with legal professionals and partner organisations in several countries to support affected women and girls.
We may be able to help

- is being pressured or forced to marry;
- has been engaged or promised without her consent;
- is underage;
- is being threatened by her family or the prospective husband; or
- fears violence or retaliation because she refuses the marriage?
We may be able to help where the perpetrator, prospective husband, or person organising the marriage lives in the European Union, the United States, Canada, or Australia.
Through our cooperation with legal professionals and partner organisations in these regions, we can assess the case and explore possible legal and protective measures.
Depending on the circumstances, we may be able to:
- connect the affected person with specialised lawyers;
- examine possible criminal or civil proceedings;
- support the documentation of threats, coercion, or violence;
- contact appropriate organisations or authorities;
- help identify protection and emergency-support options; and
- assist in efforts to prevent the marriage.
We cannot guarantee the outcome of an individual case. However, we will carefully assess the available information and consult our legal and protection networks to identify possible next steps.
